Academic Programme

     Mokokchung College of Teacher Education is affiliated to Nagaland University and recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE), New Delhi. It offers full-time regular B.Ed course of 2 (two) years consisting of 4 (four) semesters. The academic session starts from  1st July each year.

WORKING DAYS

 1st Semester:

2nd Semester:

  • Theory Classes :  90 Days
  • Workshop on Evaluation :  1 Week
  • Internship (Micro Teaching Practice) :  6 Days
  • Pre Internship :   2 Weeks
  • Internal/ External Exams : 10 days

3rd Semester:

  • Theory Classes :  90 Days
  • Workshop on Learning Support Material :  4 Days            
  • Internal/External Exams :  8 Days
  • Workshop on any other relevant (Academic & Non-Academic) Areas :  3 Days

4th Semester:

  • Theory Classes :  40 Days
  • Workshop on 5E Learn Plan :  3 Days
  • Block Teaching :  4-5 Days
  • Internship (Teaching Practice & Achievement Test) :  10 Weeks
  • Post Internship :  4 Weeks
  • Final Practice Teaching :  2 Weeks

CURRICULAR AREAS

The B.Ed. programme shall comprise three broad curricular areas – Perspectives in Education, Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies, and Engagement with the Field. The courses under each of these areas are as follows:

I. Perspectives in Education

Perspectives in Education includes courses in the study of childhood, child development and adolescence, contemporary India and education, theoretical foundations of knowledge and curriculum, teaching and learning, gender in the context of school and society, and inclusive education. The following are the six courses to be transacted in the two year period, under the curricular area of Perspectives in Education:

Course 1: Childhood and Growing Up

Course 2: Contemporary India and Education

Course 6: Learning and Teaching

Course 9: Gender, School and Society (1/2)

Course 8: Knowledge and Curriculum

Course 10: Creating an Inclusive School (1/2)

II. Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies

Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies offers a study of the nature of disciplines, critical understanding of the school curriculum; pedagogy as the integration of knowledge about the learner, the discipline and the societal context of learning, and research relating to different aspects of young children’s learning. The design of the programme would enable students to specialize in one subject area, at one/ two levels of school. The courses under the curricular area of ‘Curriculum and Pedagogic Studies’ for the two year period include:

Course 3: Language across the Curriculum (1/2)

Course 4: Understanding Disciplines and Subjects (1/2)

Course 7(i) & (iii): Pedagogy of School Subject (Major)

Course 7(ii) & (iv): Pedagogy of School Subject (Minor)

Course 5: Assessment for Learning

Course 11: Optional Course

III. Engagement with the Field – the Self, the Child, Community and School

This curricular area would have three components –

-Tasks and Assignments that run through all the courses as indicated in the year wise distribution of the syllabus

-School Internship

-Courses on Enhancing Professional Capacities (EPC)

Course EPC 1: Understanding Self (1/2)

Course EPC 2: Critical Understanding of ICT (1/2)

Course EPC 3: Drama and Art in Education (1/2)

Course EPC 4: Reading and Reflecting on Texts (1/2)

School Internship (Engagement with the Field)

Minimum of 20 weeks (4+16) shall be allocated over the two years for task, assignments and school internship.

School internship will be taken in four phases:

  1. Pre-Internship-2 weeks in the 1st Semester, 2 weeks in the 2nd Semester
  2. Internship
  3. Post- Internship
  4. Final practice teaching.

Note:

  • Selection of/Specialization in Pedagogy Papers will be made as per subject specialization at the Graduate Degree or Master’s Degree level. Any other choice not based on subject specialization will be made only in consultation with the College authority.
  • Should there be any change in choice of Optional Paper in the 4th Semester, the same must be done within one (1) week of the commencement of the Course (Optional paper).

ATTENDANCE

  1. The Nagaland University Norms on Attendance will apply for all student teachers enrolled for the programme. A minimum of 80 % and 90% Attendance for Theory and Practical classes/activities respectively, is to be maintained in each Semester.
  2. A candidate who does not satisfy the requirement of attendance shall not be eligible to take the Semester-end Examination of the concerned semester.
  3. A candidate who fails to satisfy the requirement of attendance in a semester may rejoin the same semester in the subsequent odd/even semesters.
  4. Absence from one class period will be treated as absent for the whole day, except for extra-ordinary reasons, for which a special leave is to be availed from the concerned faculty, which may or may not be granted.
  5. In case of absence, application for Leave is to be submitted to the authority, which may or may not be granted, depending on the merit of the reason for Leave.
  6. Attendance on the first and last working days after and before any academic breaks of 4 or more days is compulsory. Anyone absenting on such days will be treated as absent for the total number of days of academic break.

STRUCTURE AND SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

  1. There shall be a University examination at the end of each semester.

SCHOOL INTERNSHIP

Minimum of 20 weeks (4+16) shall be allocated over the two years for task, assignments and school internship.

School internship will be taken in four phases:

  1. Pre-Internship-2 weeks in the 1st Semester, 2 weeks in the 2nd Semester
  2. Internship
  3. Post- Internship
  4. Final practice teaching.

A. PRE-INTERNSHIP: It involves the following activities for a period of four (4) weeks in the first year (2 weeks in the 1st Semester, 2 weeks in the 2nd Semester). All the Pre-Internship activities will cover 50 marks.

  1. Observation of the real class room situation (Minimum of 2 Schools-Private/ Government, Different Boards eg. NBSE/CBSE, Rural/Urban) and the whole school environment. Before teaching in the classroom, the student-teacher will observe a regular classroom in the school for a week, to understand the school in totality, its philosophy and aims, organization and management, need of children curriculum and its transaction, assessment of teaching and learning.
  2. Peer group discussion
  3. Preparing a feedback and suggestion based on the observation of the real classroom situation and the whole school environment
  4. Sample demonstration/viewing different classroom situation
  5. Input from teacher educators
  6. Context analysis and reflection (JNV, KV, Eklavya)

B. INTERNSHIP AT SCHOOL: (Internship duration will be 10 weeks for 100 marks to be evaluated by the teacher educators): during internship a student-teacher shall work as a regular teacher and participate in all the school activities, scholastic, including planning, teaching and assessment, interacting with school teachers, community members, parents and children. Reflective journals and reports to be maintained during the internship period (A minimum of 50 classes).

C. POST-INTERNSHIP: Post internship duration will be of 4 weeks (one month) for 50 marks. It involves the following activities.

  1. Writing reflective journals or reports on the whole school internship programme of 20 weeks.
  2. Extended discussion among the student-teachers.
  3. Presentations by student-teachers on different aspects of the teaching experiences after the internship.

D. FINAL PRACTICE TEACHING DURATION TWO WEEKS FOR 100 MARKS: During the internship programme, four classes will be observed by the concerned supervisor/ teacher educator for final evaluation and assessment. 50 marks will be evaluated by a committee and another 50 by the supervisor.
